If we had thought of having one or two plants, the ideal is to choose a space of at least 1 or 1.20 m². Using rooms that are too big will make you waste space, and the consumption of the installation will not be profitable. Also, think that your plants will be in this space all their life; therefore, you must think in the long term and imagine how they will be when they are fully developed.

What materials are needed?

  • A growing cabinet to choose from according to the available size. If you have a cupboard or closed space in your house where no light enters, you will only need reflective paper to cover the room.
  • One or two 400-600 W lamps or spotlights (depending on the size of the crop)
  • Pulleys to raise and lower the lights
  • An extractor that renews the air in space
  • A fan to move it through space
  • An odour filter so as not to arouse suspicion
  • A timer to control light and dark hours
  • A thermohydrometer to measure temperature and humidity

To avoid having to buy it in parts, there are indoor growing kits that come perfectly equipped with everything you need to grow your plants.

Once you have the materials, it is time to assemble your installation. It is important to have a totally closed place where we can control ourselves the light that our plants receive. The easiest way is to use a growing closet, but if you already have a space like a pantry or a wardrobe or you have built your own ‘indoor’ with recycled materials, remember that you must cover it with reflective paper to maximize the light of the lights and at the same time isolate it in the dark. Be careful with the lights that slip under the doors or any slits: the plant needs light but also its hours of rest without it.

CFL lights (compact fluorescent lamps) consume less energy than MH lights (metal halide); however, the latter will be much more beneficial in the vegetative phase, given their power. HPS (high pressure sodium) lighting systems are usually chosen for flowering plants. However, if you want to get better quality lights that last for a few seasons, the best choice will be LED (light-emitting diode) lights, the latest to come on the market and known as the revolution in crop lighting systems.

To know which type of extractor is better, we must make some mathematical calculations to obtain the cubic meters of flow per hour that must be given according to the space and the lamps that we have:

  • According to space. For example, we have a space 1 x 1 x 2 m. The calculation would be 1x1x2=2 x 60 = 120 m³
  • According to watts. If, in our case, we have a 400w bulb with an average outside temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and we want to achieve a temperature of 5 degrees more inside our crop, that is, 20 degrees, we must multiply that difference of five by 0.32, which results in 1.6. We will use this figure to divide by the number of watts, i.e. 400/1.6 and thus we will obtain the amount of m³ of our extractor. In our example, it will be 250 m³/h.

Once the mathematical operations have been carried out, we will keep the highest figure in order to choose the most suitable extractor. In the case of the example, we will have to look for an extractor of 250 m³/h.

We can also use a fan to move the air inside the room. It will allow us to homogenize the distribution of gases in the atmosphere and create a slight wind that moves our plants, strengthening their stems. In these closed spaces, hot air accumulates in the upper part; therefore, the most suitable solution is to place both extractors and fans in high areas or even hanging from the ceiling. In addition to taking up less space, we will ensure that the air currents are optimal for the temperature required for plant growth.

Up to this point we will have a basic installation for your crop. However, you can also count on other elements such as odour filters that are installed in the fans themselves and help you not to arouse suspicion. For this purpose there are also air freshening products or even a much more natural option: planting other odorous vegetables in your environment, such as lavender.

If you want to have a more exhaustive control over your crop you can get two devices that will be very useful, the timer and the thermohygrometer. The first one will allow you to turn on and off the light, the extractor and the fan automatically, while with the second one you will measure the temperature and humidity of the crop. Even the most advanced thermohygrometers have the option of memorizing the maximum and minimum figures so that you can know the climate of the crop while you are away.

Now all you have to do is get to work and prepare the indoor space for your marijuana crop. Following these tips will get a good harvest of buds that will make the next season to install the ‘indoor’.
